Looks to be a very light storm at best for this weekend.  I would bet on less than 6 inches Sunday night.  Probably more like 2-3.  NOGAPS model is showing little to no snow.

Can’t believe how much is on the ground after returning from Christmas!

Dec 282008

There are mixed indications for the next storm.  The NOGAPS forecast is showing a return to the persistent high pressure off the California coast.  This is what shutdown precipitation in October and November.  This forecast has been very accurate in the long range 5-7 day time.

Also, this year, Accuweather has been very robust. They are showing a reopening of the storm door next weekend.  Their long range forecasts often float around on the actual storm arrival date.

The Climate Prediction Center has been inaccurate, until everyone else predicts moisture.  They are forecasting exceptionally dry for the next two weeks. Their weekend predictions are only computer generated, without any human adjustments.

Monday will tell.

Wisconsin has it rough again this year: Madison Snowfall Record

They are looking at topping last year’s record. Winter weather records are falling.  Some points to remember:

  • London records earliest snowfall
  • Idaho records earliest snowfall
  • New Orleans, Las Vegas, Malibu all receive snow in December. Las Vegas’ airport close because of snowfall.
  • Washington State declares snow emergency
  • Flagstaff has had nearly triple the “normal” snowfall, roughly 2.5 times the “normal” moisture for the month of December.

Fortunately/Unfortunately, the storm storm has slammed shut for the next couple weeks.

Happy Holidays

Dec 252008

Merry Christmas everone!  What more could we ask for! As much as a foot of fresh snow is on the way!

Longer term, it looks like we may be on tap for a spell of warmer, dryer conditions.  But, there is the old adage that snow breeds snow. We will see.

Ok, I guess I blew that one.  I didn’t thin the precip would start til after dark. But, this is part of the fun of Flagstaff living. One little blip of moisture can make a huge difference. Now, I am betting on a storm total of 8-12 inches by noon on Tuesday.

Looks like about 12 inches will be here with the Christmas Storm. Here’s to Bing Crosby’s White Christmas!

Looks like 6 inches for Monday night.  Before and after look insignificant.

Dec 212008

Moisture levels for this week are lower than last week. But, the overall pattern looks to be the same. We should see off and on wintry conditions.  Precip amounts won’t be as great, but we could be looking at a white Christmas with a few inches of  snow before and after.

I still think next weekend might be the stronger storm.

Tuesday’s snowfall was a record for that date.  So far, December is over double the normal for the month.  But remember, the fall was both dryer than normal.  Since, September 1, we are at roughly half of normal.  The storm door continues to look open for the next two weeks. Snowbowl opened today with excellent powder skiing according to the people who went.

Looks like there is a chance for a White Christmas.  I won’t forecast for Christmas until sometime Monday.

For the six-straight days of precip, the details are below.  Again, hats off to the folks working the plows around here.

Date Precip Snow
12/13/2008 0.05 0.60
12/14/2008 0.06 0.30
12/15/2008 0.24 4.00
12/16/2008 0.35 8.00 Record
12/17/2008 1.06 7.30
12/18/2008 0.48 missing

I’ll post a bigger review this weekend.

Looks like the last storm delivered over and inch-and-a-half of water.  Hard to decide what the “snowfall” was like.  It was so wet.  Seemed to fall as slush.

Never made the single digit temperatures.  Farly moderate for the whole week.

Did everyone notice that it snowed everyday for six straight days; Saturday-Thursday?

Looks like we are on tap for some storm twice a week thru the end of the year. The  Monday-Tuesday storm for next week is looking wimpy in comparison to this week.  But another is on the way for later next week, with more moisture.

Oh yeah, Looks like the Snowbowl is opening…HURRAY!!! Skiing at Christmas

In Flagstaff it has snowed every day since Saturday, December 13.
